Meet Our Staff

Chip Hutler, Site Director

Chip has been involved in United Methodist and YMCA Camps for the past 30 years. He is looking forward to seeing you at Wesley Woods and sharing all that Wesley Woods has to offer: a place to retreat, relax and renew as well awesome summer camp experiences.  He enjoys the beauty of God’s creation and spending time hiking, biking and photography. Chip lives at Wesley Woods with his wife Laura and their chocolate lab Abby.

Joanne Appenzeller, Office Manager

Full time staff since 1995, performing bookkeeping, keeping track of the staff, and providing hospitality services. Married to Eldon Appenzeller, with four adult children: Lora, Traci, Jennifer, and Brian. Grandmother to 11+ grandchildren. Hometown: Indianola, Iowa.

Gracie Gibler, Program Coordinator

Gracie is an Iowa native who is passionate about the Iowa United Methodist Camping Program and is excited to help grow and oversee the summer and year around youth programs at Wesley Woods.  She spent many of her high school and college summers at Wesley Woods and loves working alongside the summer and year around staff to ensure campers and guests have wonderful experience.

John Miller, Maintenance

John has been full time staff at Wesley Woods for more than 30 years. He has served on Summer Staff, Volunteer Ministry Assistant and Ranch Manager before taking over as Building and Grounds Manager. John is originally from northeast Missouri and is married to Lora Appenzeller. John and Lora are blessed with four children:  Andreas, Annaliese, Angelika and Anson.

Marni McMillan, House Keeper

Staff since 2005. Provides clean and beautiful facilities for retreat guests. She has two children, Kiersten and Sarah. Hometown: California

Matt Dahlin, Retreat Coordinator

Matt has worked in Iowa United Methodist Camps for seven years. Matt’s experience includes working at Okoboji UM Camp as the Waterfront Coordinator, High Ropes Coordinator and Ministry Assistant. He is looking forward to working with groups and volunteers to assure great experiences here at Wesley Woods!

Rick Peake, Food Service Coordinator

After 30 plus years managing in the foodservice industry Rick felt called to return to his roots in the camp kitchen.  With experience at three previous camps and several other foodservice operations Rick brings a passion for tasty food and superior service. He is excited to be working with the camp staff team to make Wesley Woods the number one choice for camping and retreats in Central Iowa.

Michael Curtis, Equestrian Coordinator

Michael's 25+ years of extensive equine experience, starting in 1987 in Kentucky, has given her a wealth of information to share with the visitors and students here at Barnum Equestrian Center. Her varied journeys in the areas of 3-day eventing, jumping, classical dressage, vaulting, clinics, shows, liberty, trick training and natural horsemanship have led to a patient, positive, progressive learning style. This is built on trust and communication which creates a bonding partnership between humans and horses . As an instructor, she has a willingness to share her love of the horse to anyone who wants to learn, regardless of age or level. Michael's passions in life include all God's animals, most anything outdoor related, photography, music, art, cake design and traveling. Her husband of 17 years, Matt Curtis, works alongside her as our herd's barefoot practitioner. They have 4 furry kids, SweePea the kitty, Phoenix the 6lb "big dog", Sargent Shah the Arabian and Elliott the Dutch Warmblood.

Bill Tomlinson, Full Time Volunteer

He has been serving as a full time volunteer since 1991 and specializes in handyman and woodworking tasks. Married to Eileen and is a retired UMC Pastor. Resides in Indianola.
